Why the Cheapest Concrete Quote Is Usually the Most Expensive One

You get three quotes for a new driveway. Two land around $8,000. One comes in at $5,500. Same driveway, same square footage — so why wouldn't you take the cheap one?

Because concrete is one of those trades where the most important work is invisible the day the job is finished. A driveway poured over a skimped base looks identical to one done right — for about two winters. Then the cracking, heaving and scaling starts, and there's no fixing it without tearing the whole thing out.

Where Lowball Quotes Cut Corners

The base. This is the big one. A slab that survives Ontario freeze-thaw needs proper excavation and a compacted granular base. Skipping compaction or shorting the gravel depth saves the contractor real money and time — and it's the number-one reason driveways fail early in this climate.

The mix. Exterior concrete in Ontario should be 32 MPa air-entrained. A weaker or non-air-entrained mix is cheaper per cubic metre and will scale and spall after a few winters of salt and freeze cycles. Ask any contractor what mix they're pouring. If they hesitate or can't answer, that tells you everything.

The thickness. Quotes rarely get compared on slab depth. A 3.5" pour uses noticeably less concrete than a proper 4–5" slab. You can't see the difference from above — until a heavy vehicle finds it.

Control joints and finishing. Concrete cracks; the skill is making it crack where you want. Properly spaced control joints, correct timing on the finish, and curing practices are craftsmanship items that rushed crews skip.

What's not included. Some low quotes simply leave things out — removal and disposal of the old surface, grading, or cleanup — that show up later as "extras."

How to Compare Quotes Line by Line

Don't compare bottom-line numbers until every quote answers the same questions in writing:

The Quote Comparison Checklist

  • Slab thickness (should be 4–5" minimum for driveways)
  • Base prep: excavation depth and compacted granular base included?
  • Concrete mix specified — 32 MPa air-entrained for exterior work
  • Reinforcement: mesh, fibre, or rebar, and where
  • Control joints: spacing and method
  • Removal and disposal of old surface included?
  • Cleanup and grading of surrounding areas
  • Proof of liability insurance and WSIB coverage
  • Written payment terms — never large cash upfront with nothing in writing
The real math: a driveway that's $2,500 cheaper but lasts 8 years instead of 25+ isn't a deal — it's paying for the same driveway twice. Curious what proper work should cost? See our 2026 local pricing guide with real per-square-foot ranges for Innisfil, Barrie and area.

What a Legitimate Quote Looks Like

Every quote we issue is written and itemized: scope, mix design, base prep, thickness, payment terms, and what happens with the old surface. We carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage, we're HST registered, and our number is on every document. Not because it's fancy — because when a contractor puts specifics in writing, they're accountable to them.
